Father Capodanno baptized my wife Marie in February, 1964. Family members have always spoke of him through the years but until I recently saw his program on television, I never realized how special he was. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why Marie is so special.

Just finished reading "The Grunt Padre". As a former Army "brat" our family was always close with the Catholic chaplains. Many of those "ordinary" chaplains exhibited the same dedication to their troops as Fr. Vincent. He was not only good and holy priest but also a good military officer supporting his men and women. What a shining example of true Christian love. There is no doubt that he is enjoying eternal happiness with Our Lord in heaven whose entire life on earth was one of service to others.

What a wonderful man Father Capodanno must have been. I recently read his story in the "Word Among Us." He is truly an inspiration to all of us Christians. His faith and courage were unquestioned. I hope that someday I can obtain his picture to place on my wall. As an Air Force veteran who served at Ubon and Udorn, Thailand I know what our brave men went through in the jungles of Viet Nam. I found your website by reading about Reverend Capodanno on the Free Republic FReeper Foxhole at freerepublic.com. I served in the USN in Nam. I was there from 1968 to 1969 on river boats north of DaNang. I'm sure that God was quick to tuck Vincent under his wing in heaven. I'm sure that had he survived he would be like most other hero's, saying it was the others that were the heroes not him. God bless him for what he did, and love he had for "his grunts". He was a far better man than most.

As a native Staten Islander, I knew the story of Fr. Capodanno and remember the news of his death. As a grandmother of a Marine, I am going to ask Fr. Vincent, daily, to intercede for my grandson's safety and well being. Thank you for the article as it reminded me of a person who, though I never knew him in person, was a very real presence in my young life. God bless you for the work you do….

I served on the USS Capodanno with the US Navy Reserves out of Cadillac, Mich. 1977 approximately to 1988, or until they decommissioned it. Proud to have served on her! Enjoyed the shipmates- especially the "Big Teddy bear".

Recently I viewed Father Vincent Robert Capodanno's story on EWTN and it inspired me to read "The Grunt Padre" by Father Daniel Lawrence Mode. Father Capodanno was such a spiritual and compassionate man, and truly lived the life of Christ.

I was recently introduced to Reverend Capodanno. Being a teenager during the Vietnam War and seeing white crosses appear in my neighborhood, knowing my friends died on foreign soil defending my freedom and the heinous stories told of how they were treated. I have peace knowing that Rev. Capodanno was there with them and easing their fears and giving them hope. God bless our soldiers, their families, and our allies! PEACE through sacrifice, may we never take it for granted.

What a great story! Chaplains were among the least appreciated during Vietnam. I am pleased to honor him in the USMC brotherhood. The Medal of Honor Memorial is in Indianapolis. I intend to visit it again soon and honor this brave and dedicated man. Semper Fi!

I am a former Marine. I served in the Korean War. We had our Catholic Chaplain and I couldn't begin to say what a great comfort it was to have him with us. Our parish Priest (Fr. Brunnert) was a Chaplain and he was killed in Korea. I just want to say God Bless all Chaplains and God Bless you….!
