2002 Capodanno Guestbook TONY ATTANASIO Orange Park, FL 1/18/2002 As a former Marine, I was proud to read The Grunt Padre and subsequently share a cab with Fr. Capodanno’s brother, Jimmy. Being with this “old Marine” made me proud. Ask Jimmy if he remembers sharing a cab with the DEA agent on Staten Island coming back from Newark Airport. Thank you Father and Jimmy. Lt. Joseph E. Pilon, MD, USNR 1/5 (Ret) Sherwood, WI 2/3/2002 Fr. Mode has done a very creditable job of "telling it like it was" ad maijorem Dei gloriam. Nice work! I have an anecdote about the debate Fr. Capodanno and I carried out the day before he died concerning "Should priests and doctors go to the field or stay in the rear where they can do the most good for the most troops?" You already know the answer to who won the debate... Lydia Caldeira Mondamin, Iowa 2/18/2002 I am so glad you have opened the web for more info of the life of Father Capodanno. Thank you So Much. Dick Smith Westerly, RI 02891 2/21/2002 Thank you, Ray Harton, for visiting my friend LT Myllymaki on October 2, 2000. Looking forward to reading the story of Father Capodanno. Dick Smith Rev. (Father) Mark Camp, CJ Kennesaw, GA 2/25/2002 Very nice web site! I just purchased the book and am looking forward to reading it. I was in the Marine Corps from 1971-1977 and am currently a full time police officer and police chaplain. RACHEL M. HERNANDEZ Chesapeake, VA 3/19/2002 Thank you Ray Harton for visiting my brother, Marcos Hernandez, on his 63rd birthday [September 14, 2000]. I have been looking for someone who knew him in Vietnam…..THANKS, Rachel Jerry McGovern Chicago, Illinois 3/23/2002 I served with the 5th Marine Regiment from February 1966 to March 1967. Charles Henning 3/27/2002 I used to go to high school with Fr Mode in Korea in the early '80s. What an amazing find to see that he's done this. When I remember Dan, all I can say is: "I wouldn't have expected him to NOT become a priest!" He was pretty devoted even back then. Eagle Scout, straight arrow, etc. Unlike his twin, Steve :) Take care! Vincent's MOH citation, that we have a page on our web site dedicated to him. All information there was garnered from others including his brother Jim. Fr. Capodanno was truly a wonderful son, brother, relative, friend, priest and Marine. He went where the Lord would be. Anne Marie McDonnell North Providence, Rhode Island 4/20/2002 I read Father Daniel Mode's account of Father Vincent Capodanno's life in the book entitled "The Grunt Padre". It is truly inspirational! Whether he is officially canonized or not, I am sure that Father Capodanno is a saint in heaven. Anne Marie William White Laguna Hills, California 4/20/2002 I served as a Navy Corpsman for 26 years, 14 of them with the Marine Corps. Having served with the 7th Marines, I was surprised I had not heard or known father Capodanno prior to hearing of his book. I have ordered 6 and plan to pass them out to vets I know and see if the 7th has one. If not, they soon will. God Bless Father Vince, you are my intercessor from now on. Your mission continues! Stephen P. Brock Chesapeake, Virginia 5/10/2002 I am a Major in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and a Deputy Sheriff. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "THE GRUNT PADRE" because of the dedication that Father Capodanno gave himself to: GOD, COUNTRY, and CORPS. His selfless devotion to and ultimate sacrifice for the Marines of the 5th and 7th Marines (ones he knew and didn't know) is an example of true leadership and godliness for all people to follow. I am not of the Catholic faith Michael H Torrey Fairfax, VA 5/18/2002 I am a Major in the Marine Corps Reserve. I met Father Mode about 1 1/2 years ago when he spoke at a Marine Corps birthday breakfast that I co-organized for former and retired Marines and Navy in Vienna, VA. As a cradle Catholic, I was and continue to be inspired by Father Mode's story of Father Capodanno. It was hard holding back tears when reading this story, as Father Vincent's shining example of being Christ to others through his continued sacrifice can give one a sense of hope in the midst of gloom and despair. Semper Fidelis, Michael H. Torrey Frank Montanez Palatine, IL 5/26/2002 Great Story of a person's dedication to his fellow man. A true face of Christ. Semper Fi, Father. Neill Raymond Bainbridge Island, Washington 5/27/2002 In '65 and early 1966 I was with the 12th Marines in Phu Bai. and one day a chaplain came down the road and heard our confessions and held Mass for us. I never forgot that because I had been away from the church for so long. I actually went back to the field confessional a couple of times that day, and told him sins I forgot to tell him the first time or two. He was pretty good natured about it, the last time telling me it was ok I didn't have to come back anymore that day. After that confession something stirred, and I never went back to the previous life I was leading Tony Mignone Staten Island, New York 5/27/2002 God bless Fr. Vincent. Lester Modelowitz Staten Island, New York 7/15/2002 I never knew Father Vincent Capodanno, but I wish I did. Staten Island Vietnam Veterans will always remember him. Mike Hayes Castle Rock, CO 7/26/2002 To Father Vince and the rest of Mike Amen Michael Vincent Drabin Jacksonville, FL 8/2/2002 My grandmother, Dorothy Minero, was Father Vincent's sister. I was given my middle name in honor of him. Rich Slade Freehold, NJ.07728 8/21/2002 Father Vincent arrived in Heaven & everything is well in hand now Laurie Nolan 9/26/2002 I pray to Fr. Capodanno every evening for my U.S. Marine son. I ask his blessing and protection. My son has been in the Marines over four years now, since he reenlisted, and so far my prayers that he come home for the holidays and special events have always been answered. Thank you dear, Fr. Vincent. Cheryl Hall Parrish, FL 10/14/2002 My husband Gary was stationed in Gaeta, Italy from 19951998. As a military wife, I enjoyed the beauty of the area and especially the piazza in honor of Fr. Capodanno located in an area known as Piccolo Alley in Gaeta. An Italian professor was often a speaker at the intercultural relations classes and was always moved to tears as he told of the Italian American who so valiantly ministered to our soldiers in Viet Nam. Several years later, as I was browsing in a small bookstore in Charleston, SC, I heard Fr. Mode read from his book "The Grunt Padre". After the reading, I had an opportunity to talk with Fr. Mode and encouraged him to visit Gaeta, to see the memorial and to speak with Prof. Cuoco. Since that time, Fr Mode participated in the dedication ceremony of the new Capodanno Medical Clinic located at the Naval Support facility in Gaeta. What a blessing Fr. Vincent's life continues to be to all of those who knew him and to those of us who have heard his story. Mike Waterford, Michigan 11/11/2002 I just heard Fr. Mode on "Kresta in the Afternoon", on WDEO Catholic radio in SE Michigan. The story of Fr. Capodanno was incredibly touching James Bobowski Beachwood, New Jersey 12/1/2002 I Had the privilege and honor of holding Father Capodanno's Medal Of Honor in my hands. I thank his nephew Jim Capodanno for giving me that honor. |
